Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County firefighters responded to assist Calhoun County with a fully involved barn fire that spread to a mobile home southeast of Swansea, Friday. The fire was in the 500 block of Sardis Church Road. The request for assistance came in just after 11:30 a.m. Units from Lexington County’s Sandy Run, Swansea, Mack Edisto, and Sharpe’s Hill stations responded. The battalion chief for the south region was also on the scene. Other trucks were moved into the Swansea area to stand by while our resources were tied up on the mutual aid call. The first due firefighters reported that the barn had already burned to the ground, but the mobile home was involved. There was a grass fire as well. Tanker trucks came into play quickly as there are no fire hydrants in the immediate area. The tankers carry water from an established source, like a fire hydrant, or can be filled by a fire engine that sets up to draw water from a pond or creek. Calhoun County did respond with their departments. They had units from Sandy Run Calhoun, Jumper Station, and other volunteers on the scene fighting the fire as well. Representatives from the utility company were also on the scene to cut the power to the home. The fire was brought under control in less than an hour.
