R/V fire closes part of I-26 near Cayce Friday morning

Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) All lanes of I-26 were closed in one direction near the I-77 interchange by a motorhome fire Friday morning. Firefighters from Lexington County responded from several stations in both directions. When they arrived, the recreational vehicle was well involved in fire.

The interstate was closed by the fire supervisors as a precaution for the firefighters who were working in the road. Eventually, they had hoses across the lanes as fire crews entered the motorhome to put the fire out. Fire officials reported by radio that drivers who were stuck in the traffic stopped and actually started reversing down the interstate to take the exit they just passed. At that point, the fire officials were able to open one lane of traffic again so that drivers would stop this unsafe behavior.

Eventually the fire was put out and the scene was turned over to troopers from the SCHP. They dealt with supervising the cleanup of the scene and having the motorhome towed away. At that point, the entire interstate was reopened to traffic.
