Driver suffered medical Issue that caused accident, child passenger’s injuries minor

Chapin, SC (James Bowers) – Firefighters, an EMS crew, and police officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Columbia Avenue in Chapin Friday, after a single vehicle accident occurred during the height of the morning commute. Officer Gainous of the Chapin Police Department said that the accident occurred at 7:45 a.m. on the eastbound side of the road.

Gainous said the department believes the driver suffered a medical episode prior to the crash that caused her to lose control of her vehicle. The auto left the roadway and turned onto its side before striking a tree. A good Samaritan bystander helped the driver get out of the car, and then helped a a child who was still in the overturned car get out.

Gainous said that the child suffered what he described as what was believed to be a “very minor injury” which was easily treated. The two occupants were transported by ambulance to Palmetto Health Richland, where they were evaluated, and the driver was treated for the medical issue.
