Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A double-wide mobile home caught fire and burned Friday afternoon off Happytown Road near Gaston. Reports of the fire started coming in just after 2:00 p.m. and trucks and firefighters from across southern Lexington County responded.
Heavy black smoke rising into the air from the area where the fire had been reported telegraphed the severity of the blaze. Crews arrived to find the home burning heavily. Those first teams attacked the fire quickly and were able to knock the flames down in about 45-minutes. During this time, the road was closed. Once the fire was brought under control, the on-duty battalion chief requested a backhoe tractor from the county’s Department of Public Works to pull the smoldering remains apart so that firefighters could ensure everything was completely out.
The County of Lexington did not report any injuries had occurred while the fire was being put out. The occupants of the home were displaced. The county dispatch center notified the American Red Cross to assist them.
