House near Boling Springs heavily damaged by fire Tuesday

Boiling Springs, SC (Paul Kirby) – A home in the Boling Springs area was heavily damaged by fire just after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. The fire was in the 100 block of Deer Springs Trail between Calks Ferry and Pond Branch Roads.

Crews from the Lexington County Fire Service were assisted by firefighters from the Irmo Fire District. There were also personnel and equipment there assisting from Lexington County’s EMS.

The first firefighters to arrive found heavy black smoke coming from the attached garage of the home. When a fire officer circled the structure, he found heavy flames coming out the rear of it as well. He ordered the first fire crews to advance a large handline toward the fire. That was followed with a smaller one that was also being used to battle the blaze.

Because there were no fire hydrants in the area, a rural water shuttle was used to supply water for the firefighters. Even with this limited water supply, they quickly knocked the fire down. Firefighters were eventually able to move into the home, ventilate the structure, and completely put the fire out. Unfortunately, the fire and water had already done heavy damage to the house displacing the four residents who lived there. The American Red Cross was notified to assist the displaced family by the battalion chief.

The fire did appear to have started in the garage area of the home; however, an investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is underway.
