LEXINGTON, S.C. — Students at Deerfield Elementary School have a new way to build friendships on the playground.
As part of Kindness Day on October 28, 2016, DES unveiled new buddy benches with the entire school gathered outdoors to celebrate.
The idea for buddy benches was initiated by DES Student Maille White last year. Students can sit on the bench to signal that they don’t have a friend to play with, and other students are encouraged to invite them to play.
White, her sister Moira, and fellow Fifth-Grader Hannah Hanson led the buddy bunch dedication.
The buddy bench celebration was the culminating event of Random Acts of Kindness Week at DES. Throughout the week, teachers and students participated in a #kindnesscounts Twitter challenge in addition to donating cans of food to Lexington Interfaith Community Services.
