Chapin, Dutch Fork clinch cheer state championships

IRMO, SC - Chapin and Dutch Fork varsity cheerleading teams took home state championships Saturday at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.

“We are so excited about winning the state championship and continuing a tradition of excellence at Chapin High School,” said Chapin cheer coach Vicki Williams. “We practiced tirelessly for many weeks in order to win this championship. So much time, preparation and dedication was shown throughout the year by our girls and we are so proud of them to represent Chapin High School in a first class manner.” Williams credited her team’s motto ‘Heart of a Champion’ in helping drive her team toward the title. Senior captain Katelyn Nirallo said. “To win the state title is just amazing. The emotions can’t describe it.”

This marks Chapin High School’s 11th state championship under Williams who took over the program in 2002. The Eagles have now won eight state championships in the past nine years. Chapin High School becomes the first program in South Carolina history to clinch a state title in three different classifications (AA, AAA and AAAA). “This is a remarkable accomplishment,” said Principal Akil Ross. “Maintaining this level of excellence year after year is really a tribute to Coach Williams, cheerleaders past and present and the support of parents and our school community.”

It was a year of redemption for the Silver Foxes, who clinched the AAAAA state championship. Dutch Fork fell four points short of winning the AAAA state championship a year ago. And, earlier this year fell one point behind Lexington High School at the qualifying competition. But, at the State Championships the Silver Foxes prevailed. “Anytime you face the level of competition that we do, to be crowned state champions means so much,” said Dutch Fork cheer coach Katie Nunnery. “For the team to bounce back and respond the way they did, it is such a great way to finish the season.”

This marks the Silver Foxes second state title in three years. Dutch Fork High School Principal Dr. Greg Owings was all smiles when asked about the performance saying, “I couldn’t be more proud of Coach Nunnery and our cheer team. They demonstrated perseverance and dedication throughout the year and in the end all their hard work paid off. Thanks to all our parents and those that have supported our cheer teams over the years.”
