IRMO, SC - For the third consecutive year, Irmo High School has been recognized as a Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association.
This year’s Gold level designation marks the third time Irmo High has been recognized for its Bee Fit Wellness Initiative. The program has included grants to support a fitness lab, walking trail, seminars and other wellness opportunities. School leaders were beyond thrilled to hear the news.
“We are so excited to be recognized again this year by the American Heart Association as a Fit-Friendly Worksite,” said Irmo High School nurse Patricia Powell, who started the initiative. “The staff at Irmo High School has embraced the culture of a healthy lifestyle and we are going to continue providing the tools for our staff to accomplish these goals.”
Gold level recognition is awarded to worksites that fulfill criteria such as offering employees physical activity support, increasing healthy eating options at work and promoting a wellness culture. Requirements for Gold level achievement are a minimum of 25 employees at the worksite, as well as implementing at least six of the physical activity criteria, two of the nutrition criteria and one of the culture criteria listed in the application form.
In the fall of 2014, Irmo High School launched its “Bee Fit Wellness Initiative,” a program to help teachers and staff implement simple, everyday steps to improving their health. Funded through a $2,500 grant by the District Five Foundation, the initiative has included a new walking trail at the school, seminars, a fitness lab, Zumba and other activities for staff.
Irmo High School principal David Riegel shared his thoughts on the recognition saying, “As we know, teachers have a stressful job. Nurse Powell helps our teachers remain focused on their health by offering health screenings and health tips on a regular basis here at school. She also organizes activities to promote fitness. Our staff has access to our fitness lab and many teachers take advantage of that opportunity as well. We believe this balance of work and fitness creates a positive environment for both our students and our staff. It is such an honor to be recognized by the AHA for the third consecutive year here at Irmo High School!”
