IRMO, SC - Hundreds of former employees of Lexington-Richland School District Five flowed through the doors of Spring Hill High School at the District’s sixth annual Retiree Luncheon, sponsored by the District Five Foundation. The retirees mingled amongst the crowd recalling old friendships while making new memories. The luncheon was created as a way to welcome back and honor former employees. It is also a way to provide information concerning recent events and accomplishments in the District.
“We have always claimed District Five to be extraordinary and it is certainly backed up by the strong legacy and tradition, made possible through the work of our retirees and all those who have come before us,” said District Five Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner. “We want our retirees to know that we honor their service and look forward to having their continued support as members of this community.” During the luncheon, Dr. Hefner shared the many highlights that have taken place in the District. He was followed by a rousing performance from the Chapin High School Jazz Band.
Lubertha Williams, who served the district’s transportation department for over 17 years was among the retirees. Williams reflected on her favorite moment during her bus driving days and said it was all about her kids. “I had the best bus in the district,” Williams smiled. “I always made sure that I showed them the love and care they needed, and made sure they made it to school and back home safely. Those were always my top priorities.”
Current District Five Board of Trustees Vice Chairman Larry Haltiwanger, Sr. graduated from the district in 1967 and has made the luncheon a yearly event. “The people here have dedicated themselves to our students,” Haltiwanger said. “This luncheon is the perfect way to show all of the retirees from District Five that they are appreciated and have made a positive difference in young lives.”
Dr. Tim Brown served in District Five in multiple capacities, including principal at Seven Oaks Elementary School from 1969-1972. From there, he spent 22 years at the District Office as Director of Elementary Education before taking on Assistant Superintendent roles in Instruction and Personnel. Brown praised the District Five Foundation for turning the luncheon into what it is today saying, “We appreciate the Foundation providing this for us so much. It is a wonderful idea to bring retirees in and inform them on what is taking place in the district today so we can continue to support them.”
District Five Foundation Vice President Dr. Mary Kennerly is the driving force behind this annual celebration. She stressed the reason behind hosting the luncheon each year is to thank all of those who paved the way. “One of the things that the District wants to do is thank everyone who has given so much of their life to this profession and our students,” Kennerly said. “The reputation has been wonderful since all these people started, and it has continued to be. The other thing is that most everyone who retires in District Five stays here so all of us that are retired still have an investment into what is happening in our schools and we want to know about all the continued success here in District Five!”
