Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending the 28th Annual Economic and Financial Literacy Awards ceremony in which three of the award recipients were from Chapin. Yvonne Strange from Chapin Intermediate School was named SC Economics Outstanding Teacher. Her student Ethan Harder placed second in the National InvestWrite competition. This is the second Chapin Intermediate student to do well in this national competition as MoMo Farmer won last year. The SC Economic folks said they have never had back-to-back winners (from the same school, same class and same teacher) before in this competition. And Chapin High School placed second in the SC Finance Challenge. As someone who works in the financial industry, I am thrilled with the work our local schools are doing to encourage young people about this important subject area. I continue to be #ChapinProud!
We had a very informative council meeting last week. Andy Metts gave an extensive review of the financial considerations for funding the wastewater treatment plant expansion, and council unanimously approved a request to move forward with submitting plans to the State Revolving Fund for a loan to proceed with construction. As a point of interest for those who talk about rapid growth in the Chapin area, Andy shared the following: four years prior to The Great Recession in 2008, the town’s permitted sewer taps averaged 356 per year over a four year period. From the time I became mayor in January 2014 to now, an average of 197 sewer taps have been permitted annually. I share this because it clarifies that the growth is not as fast as some people perceive it to be.
Our friends at the US Coast Guard Auxiliary want to remind us that this is National Safe Boating Week and encourage everyone who likes to enjoy our state’s waterways to use caution and care to avoid injuries and save lives. First and foremost, always remember to wear your life jackets when boating. Get a free vessel safety check on your boat to make sure required safety equipment is aboard and legal. Take a boating safety class to increase your knowledge of operating your boat safely and encourage your passengers to be on the lookout to alert you of any swimmers, divers, skiers or unusual objects in the water. Be alert for severe weather and thunderstorms and make sure your navigation lights are working prior to leaving the dock. These are just a sample of ways to stay safe this summer. Congratulations to our Chapin area artists that recently were named winners of this year’s Crooked Creek Art League Juried Art Show - Roger Buenzow, Karen Larrabee, Dan Frick, Randy Spencer, Ron Weathers, Barbara Teusink, Tommy Thompson, and Ruby DeLoach. We have so many talented people in our community, and their artwork adds to our quality of life, whether it’s through public exhibitions or individuals buying their art for display in their homes or offices. Be sure to go by Crooked Creek Park and enjoy the art show entries and our Chapin winners.
Next Monday, town offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day. However, I remind you that the American Legion will host its annual flag ceremony and program beginning at 10 am at Town Hall. Retired Navy Commander Al Billings will be the featured speaker, and the Auxiliary will host a reception immediately following the ceremony in the Community Room. All are invited to be part of this special annual observance for our fallen service men and women.
