South Congaree, SC (Paul Kirby) The IPRA rodeo began Friday night in South Congaree, and as advertised, it was pure fun and excitement! This is the IPRA’s premier July 2017 event for good reason; the cowboys, cowgirls, and stock are unmatched on the circuit.
Many of these riders and ropers are vying for the championship this year, and there are dollars and points to be earned here. Each dollar equals a point toward the championship, and many of these riders are either already reigning, or past champs, or contenders for this year’s title. Many of the competitors come from across the country to participate and that equals a huge economic boost for the businesses of the area. The rodeo really is a win-win, and a huge feather in the cap for the South Congaree area.
If you missed the Friday night performance, don’t worry. There’s a second rodeo on Saturday night starting at 8:00 p.m. The gates open at 5:30 p.m. and there’s plenty of vendors so that you don’t have to worry about cooking or eating at home. Tickets are $16 for adults, $8 for children 6-11, and children 5 and under are FREE! The rodeo is held at the South Congaree Equestrian Arena at 395 Oak Street, West Columbia, SC.
In this short video, McLain, an emerging saddle bronc and bull rider, from Honea Path, SC, talks about his ride and the quality of the stock that Ken Treadway brought to South Congaree again this year. Many of the bulls and bucking horses are also world champs!
