Dorn VAMC assist with injured from local train derailment

Columbia, SC -- The Dorn VA Center released a statement Sunday afternoon after they helped with patients from the train crash in Pine Ridge early Sunday. According to the statement, the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, S.C., provided local medical assistance today when a collision occurred between a freight train and an Amtrak passenger train around 2:30 a.m.

Of the 116 passengers injured, 12 of them were received in the medical center, one of which is a Veteran. Eight of those have been released, one was transported to a local hospital for further care, while the others will be released soon.

The director and staff of the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VAMC said in the statement that they wished to extend sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.

Officials said as a 24-hour medical facility, no impact has been hindered to Veteran patient care who continue to need medical assistance.
