District Five teacher selected for the CARC Distinguished Reading Teacher Award

Irmo, SC – Seven Oaks Elementary School fifth grade teacher Kimberly Flowers has been selected for the Columbia Area Reading Council (CARC) Distinguished Reading Teacher Award for the 2017-2018 school year. This marks the third consecutive year a teacher from District Five has been selected for this honor.

“I am so honored and appreciative to be named the CARC Distinguished Reading Teacher for the 2017-2018 school year,” Flowers said. “For them to see what I am doing in the classroom lets me know that I am on the right track and that I am doing the right things with reading. My style is not conventional. I am always implementing creative ideas for my students and I am glad they support that.”

Flowers is in her first year of teaching at Seven Oaks Elementary and sixth year overall. She received a bachelor’s degree from the College of Charleston and a master’s degree from Columbia College. She says the philosophy behind her teaching is, “striving for students to move from simply being consumers to creators. Our world needs thinkers and problem solvers who are able to propel our world, learn from its mistakes, and celebrate its successes.”

The Columbia Area Reading Council is made up of schools in Lexington, Richland and Fairfield Counties and the award is given annually to the top reading teacher in the council.

“We are so excited that Mrs. Flowers was chosen as the Columbia Area Reading Council’s Distinguished Teacher of Literacy,” said Seven Oaks Elementary principal Gina Mays. “Mrs. Flowers plans innovative and engaging lessons that provide the support students need to grow academically. She goes above and beyond to meet the needs of her students both academically and emotionally. She is a true example of a caring and dedicated teacher and we are blessed to have her as part of our school family!”
