Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Dr. Brent Powers, chief medical officer at Lexington Medical Center, has said he’s again running for the empty seat on Lexington School District One’s Board of Trustees because he has a strong belief in how that board can set the direction of our community now and in the future. Powers had previously held a seat on that board until November of 2016.
In an e-mail sent to The Lexington Ledger Wednesday, Powers said, “I’m running for school board because I believe in public education. For me public education is the pathway to the American dream. I believe each of us should work for the betterment of our community and our great nation. I believe every child deserves the opportunity to pursue a career of their choice. Public education brings us together as a community. We behave differently when our kids go to school together – it unifies us.”
Both Powers and his wife are products of public education. They met while attending Dreher High School in Columbia. Then, they both went to North Carolina for college, medical school, and graduate school, but eventually returned home to Lexington County to raise their family. They’ve been living and working in Lexington County since 2004.
The Powers have three daughters who all attend Lexington One schools - a 10th grader, 7th grader, and a 4th grader. They also have been hosting an 11th grade exchange student from the Czech Republic who has been living with them since August of last year. Powers said in his e-mail, “She will return home in June and has blessed our family immensely.”
Powers has worked as a practicing internal medicine physician at Lexington Medical Center since 2004. For the past seven years, he’s also served as chief medical officer there. Through those roles, Powers says he’s had the joy of meeting and working with many of Lexington‘s leaders.
Powers concluded that he hopes you the parents, students, staff, and voters will take the time to learn more about his candidacy. You can learn more about Brent Powers on his Facebook page or Twitter account (@PowersLex1). There is a video on Youtube also detailing his candidacy.
