Chapin, SC (Paul Kirby) – Workers who were repairing a sprinkler system in the 200 block of Lake Estate Drive near Amicks Ferry Road and Timberlake Plantation sawed into a gas line causing it to rupture Friday morning. The fire service received the call just before noon bringing equipment from the Amicks Ferry and Chapin fire stations, a battalion chief from Lexington, and hazardous material units from Round Hill.

The emergency crews could do little more than make everyone in close proximity to the rupture safe and notify the gas provider, SCE&G. When workers from the utility finally arrived on the scene, they were able to cut the gas line off at its source, stopping the flow out of the ruptured pipe.

All the emergency equipment was released from the scene by approximately 2:00 p.m.; however, they were unable to return to their stations because a passing storm had felled a tree across Amicks Ferry Road. The fire service had another truck and personnel from the county’s Corley Mill station stand by at Chapin’s main station until the tree could be cleared from the road. The road was cleared and reopened at 2:10 p.m.
