Gilbert schools go on short lockout after shots heard in the area of middle school

Gilbert, SC (Paul Kirby) – Gilbert area schools went on a short lockout today after a school resource officer heard three shots while outside with students at Gilbert Middle School. Out of an abundance of caution, the SRO escorted the students inside and recommended a lockout for the four Gilbert schools until the source of the shots could be investigated. Deputies with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department searched the area and found nothing suspicious or any activity related to a threat. At that point, the lockout was lifted.

It is not illegal to shoot in the unincorporated areas of Lexington County as long as you are not shooting at anyone or an object like someone’s car or home. You also must take precautions to prevent shots from hitting anything and be aware where your shots may be landing. Most towns and cities in the county do have ordinances banning shooting without a permit to do so. These are usually issued for special events or occasions. Today’s lockout was due to the shots being in close proximity to the school.
