One killed in Batesburg-Leesville vehicle crash following police pursuit

Batesburg-Leesville, SC - One person is dead after crashing a vehicle while running from a Batesburg-Leesville police officer. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the individual who died as Jawara A. Brunson, 26, of Batesburg. The collision occurred in the 300 block of Highland Avenue in Batesburg at approximately 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2019.

According to Coroner Fisher, Brunson was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision. Brunson attempted to evade a traffic stop initiated by an officer from the Batesburg-Leesville Police Department, which led to a brief pursuit. Brunson lost control of his vehicle, left the right side of the roadway and over-corrected, causing his vehicle to collide with a tree and overturn. Brunson was not wearing a seatbelt when the collision occurred.
