Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Units from the Lexington County Fire Service were on the scene of a hazardous materials incident on Columbia Avenue in Lexington Wednesday. They were set up in the area of the Bi-Lo where they had an active refrigerant leak. It was originally reported just after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday. Lexington police officers responded to assist with traffic and to keep people out of the area. A haz-mat team responded and suited up to mitigate the leak. The leak was reported under control around 5:30 p.m.
According to Corporal Cameron Mortenson of the Lexington Police Department, Columbia Ave was not closed due to the haz-mat incident. Motorist were advised to avoid looking at the emergency equipment if they had to travel that route.
Harrison Cahill of Lexington County said that the leak was identified as Freon gas. No one was injured during the incident although the Bi-Lo was evacuated as a precaution.
