Cayce, SC (Paul Kirby) – A kitchen fire in a small home in the 1500 block of Hopkins Street in Cayce started when some grease overheated on the stove and burst into flames. This happened shortly after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters and public safety officers from the Cayce Department of Public Safety, assisted by trucks and personnel from the City of West Columbia Fire Department, fought the fire. Fire crews from the Lexington County Fire Service moved into the city for standby while Cayce’s emergency resources were committed. Hopkins Street is just southeast of the train trestle that crosses Charleston Highway in an area of the city near Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
According to Sergeant Evan Antley, spokesman and training officer for the Cayce DPS, the fire spread to the cabinetry around the stove and the heat damaged a large portion of the kitchen. Although the firefighters brought the fire under control quickly, there was a great deal of smoke damage as a result of the blaze.
Antley said that the City of Cayce appreciated the assistance of the allied agency in a situation like this. Because there are no barriers at city limits when it comes to emergencies, the people of all areas of Lexington County, inside and outside of municipalities, are safer when disasters such as this strike.
