Sandhills Primary/Elementary “Green Team” organize recycling initiative at school

Swansea, SC - The students at Sandhills Primary/Elementary School (SPES) are working hard to do their part as good stewards of the environment. Each classroom and office in the building houses a recycling bin to make it easy to dispose of trash that can be recycled. Every Friday, the SPES Green Team picks up the recyclable trash from the classroom, ensures there is nothing in the bins that cannot be recycled, and disposes of it properly for collection later in the day. The members of the Green Team must be organized, responsible, and self-disciplined to guarantee they take care of their assigned collection routes. Some of the items recycled are paper, file folders, paper grocery bags, aluminum cans, and plastic water bottles.

“The kids learn a lot about how much easier their job is when the classes follow the guidelines, which I think can carry over into their everyday lives," said Ms. Kimmy Miller, one of the leaders of the SPES Green Team. "I always hear them notice, ‘This doesn't go in here.’ Sometimes they will say, ‘Yes! This bin was easy--everything is recyclable.’ I feel as though being on Green Team gives the kids self-pride knowing they are recycling tons of materials for SPES every school year.” Good work, SPES Green Team!
