Fire Prevention Week celebrated at Frances Mack Intermediate School

Gaston, SC - Frances Mack Intermediate School (FMIS) took part in Fire Prevention Week October 6-12. The National Fire Protection Association’s theme this year was, “Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape.” The goal was to educate everyone on the preventative steps they can take in case of a fire.

Principal Bryan Evans took some time to educate both students and staff on what the week meant. Mr. Evans encouraged everyone to create fire escape plans for their homes. “Start by drawing a level of each floor in your home, showing all doors and windows. Find two ways to get out of each room. Make sure someone will help get everyone out and teach the younger children how to escape on their own in case you cannot help them. Establish a meeting place outside and away from your home after exiting the house. Make sure your smoke alarms are properly installed and maintained.”

The staff of Frances Mack Intermediate School and Lexington School District Four said during the programs they are thankful for the Gaston Fire Station and all the firefighters do for the community. Along with keeping the community safe, they facilitate public education events, encourage visits to the firehouse, and conduct boot drives.

The two firefighters who visited the school during National Fire Prevention Week were Firefighter Michael Enfinger, who has been serving the community for the last year and a half, and Engineer Tyler Vann who has been serving for five years. They agreed the best part of their job is being able to help people in the community.
