Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Batesburg-Leesville High School Marching Panther Band has once again brought home multiple accolades over the last several weeks. They won first place in the 1A Lower State Competition on the weekend of October 19th. Then, on Saturday October 26th, the claimed 3rd place in the 1A State Championship.
This band isn’t new to winning. Over the years, they have claimed numerous honors in multiple competitions. In order to be competitive, the students work closely with their instructors perfecting their show. Meanwhile, parents and supporters build, maintain, and move multiple props that are a major part of their program. There are also beautiful costumes that must be made or bought, altered, and cleaned as needed. Their performances are no longer halftime shows, these are major musical productions.
Beginning in the heat of the summer, band members start learning the intricate routines. The students memorize these patterns that puts the correct band member on the exact spot of a football field at exactly the right time. This is done by counting their steps and moving in intricate patterns using a special step. They do all this while playing difficult musical arrangements that fit with theme of their show.
