Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) – A single-vehicle collision trapped a man in his late 50s in the wreckage of a vehicle after he lost control and went off Crystal Springs Drive deep into the woods Saturday afternoon. A deputy arrived on the scene before EMS and fire service personnel and he radioed that the man couldn’t free himself from the vehicle.
A fire engine from Boiling Springs was the initial first responder on the scene and reported that the vehicle was a good distance off the road into the dense woods. The battalion chief from the fire service requested additional equipment and personnel from South Congaree after hearing the deputy’s report. When firefighters pulled up, they went right to work, quickly freeing the man from the twisted vehicle. He was then handed off to the EMS crew for transport.
The man was transported by that Lexington County EMS team to Prisma Health’s Palmetto Richland Campus where the Midland’s Trauma Center is located. That crew began providing advanced care medical care long before arriving at the hospital. His condition Sunday morning is unknown. Although his injures were severe, they were not thought to be life-threatening.
The SCHP patrol is investigating the accident. After interviewing the passenger of the vehicle, it is believed that the man may have had some medical emergency that caused him to lose control of the vehicle prior to the accident.
