Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Scott Whetstone of Lexington County Council District One was reelected Wednesday to lead the Council as its chairman again in 2020. Whetstone was first elected to the position in 2019.
According to Whetstone, he was honored to have the council show their faith in him by trusting him with the leadership position. The vote for Whetstone was a 9-0 unanimous decision.
Whetstone has said many times that his and the council’s top priorities are the core services of local government. These are things like public safety and the public works’ operation. He also said that dirt road paving is something they’ve been trying to work on since he took the lead. Whetstone explained that this is one of the toughest issues the council deals with. In part, that’s because of the way that the state mandates the distribution of gas taxes given to counties. There is also the issue of right-of-way acquisition that often stops paving. He hopes that the council will be able to figure out a way to increase the miles of road paving in Lexington County in the future.
Councilman Todd Cullum was elected as vice-chair. He has served on the council for more than a decade and represents the council district that stretches from Cayce to Pine Ridge and a part of Gaston. Cullum has the experience to get things done and understands the ins and outs of government. His ability to establish and maintain relationships with others is also invaluable to Lexington County.
Both men are more than capable of taking on the extra workload these positions bring. Whetstone works for Dominion Energy and Cullum is an owner operator of Reeley’s Body Shop in West Columbia. Both are also married and have children.
