White Knoll Middle School Principal Guy Smith announces plans to retire

Red Bank, SC - In a staff meeting Tuesday, January 14, Guy A. Smith, principal of White Knoll Middle School, announced his plans to retire.

Lexington County School District One Superintendent Greg Little said, “Guy Smith leads by example. His hard work for and commitment to students is eclipsed only by his commitment to his staff. We will miss him.” A veteran educator with 40 years of education experience, Smith began his education career in 1979 as a social studies teacher at Richland Northeast High School in Richland School District Two.

He joined Lexington District One in 1981 as a social studies teacher at Pelion High School, where he taught social studies, served as department chair, and coached various sports, including tennis, junior varsity basketball, and varsity track.

Smith received a promotion to the position of administrative assistant at Pelion Elementary School in 2000, and a year later was promoted to the position of assistant principal at Pelion Middle School.

Another promotion in 2012 took him to the position of White Knoll Middle School principal.

Smith shared that he feels extremely fortunate to have spent so much of his professional career in Lexington District One. He is a proud graduate of Pelion High, where, he says, “caring teachers and leaders provided the opportunity for all students to achieve.”

Finally, Smith reflected that the opportunity to wrap up his career by serving as WKMS principal has been not just a great honor but also a genuine pleasure as he served the students, staff and parents of the White Knoll community.

Smith graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in education and an Interdisciplinary Master of Arts in history and education from the University of South Carolina. He holds certifications in social studies and secondary administration.

He is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, the Association for Middle-Level Education and the National Council for the Social Studies.
