Lexington, SC– The race for the SC House District 88 seat has become as heated as any race Lexington County has seen for some time. There's been the battle of the yard signs with thousands of signs blanketing the district. As one candidate's signs got larger, another candidate would one-up that and go even bigger. Charges of vandalized or stolen signs have been leveled, a complaint that's common in most every political race.
Mailers by the dozens have filled mail boxes in the district as a few of the five candidates that are running have invested tens of thousands of dollars in an effort to become the representative for a diverse portion of Lexington County. If all the money that was invested in this race were added together, that figure could overwhelm some. It truly has reached critical mass as several of the front runners slug it out in the trenches.
Now, Republican Businessman, Michael “Mike” Sturkie has released his first made for TV ad, a one-minute commercial running on TV and social media. The ad focuses on family, community, cutting taxes, helping small businesses, fixing Lexington County roads, and improving education. The ad in full can be found at www.facebook.com/MikeSturkieforStateHouse.
Mike Sturkie has already rolled out a number of endorsements from well-known local business leaders including: R. Keith Dooley (CPA, Managing Partner, Dooley & Company), Ted Hoover (Owner, Hoover Trusses INC.), Mike Hutchins (Owner, Frank’s Car Wash), Rob Motley (Partner, Insurance Office of America), and Lisa Shealy Tyson (CEO, L.A. Barrier and Son, INC.) He's certainly a well-known candidate as he's run small businesses in or from District 88 most of his adult life.
When asked for comment, Sturkie said, “I’ve been honored and humbled by the outpouring of support that I’ve received throughout the district during this campaign. I’ve been focused on talking directly with the voters and sharing my vision of how we can revitalize our economy and get our people back to work safely. If elected, I will be committed to protecting our citizens tax dollars, protecting life, defending our constitutional rights, and being accountable and accessible to the voters.”
The Republican Primary for House District 88 will be held on Tuesday, June 9th with a runoff to take place two weeks later if necessary. This is the deciding election as no Democrat or candidate from a fringe party has filed to challenge the winner of this primary in November.
Voters who live in House 88 will have the task of making an informed decision on who would best represent them at the statehouse in the coming years. They may need to dig through the mountain of mailers and tune out the abundance of yard signs to truly make an informed decision on what contains true information on the issues, and what is just attacks pieces filled with false information or innuendo from recent or years gone by. Now, at least one candidate, Sturkie, has a commercial to prompt you to vote his way. There is one thing all the candidates are united in. You really need to make your voice heard at the poll next Tuesday!
