3-year-old child goes missing in Chapin's Firebridge subdivision

Chapin, SC 07/31/2024 - On Monday, July 29th around 9:00 pm, the Chapin Police Department responded to a call regarding a missing 3-year-old child in the Firebridge subdivision. The child was last seen playing in the backyard of the family home.

Upon arrival, officers immediately began an extensive search both inside and outside the residence. Understanding that young children can often fall asleep in unexpected places, a thorough investigation of the house was conducted. Statistics show that many missing children are often found within the home.

To ensure a comprehensive search, a perimeter was established, and numerous assisting agencies were notified and quickly responded. The agencies included the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Search efforts were augmented with K-9 units, drones equipped with FLIR technology, and a helicopter. Additionally, neighboring yards were searched, and the entire neighborhood saw a significant law enforcement presence.

After an intensive search lasting over an hour, the child was found to be sleeping under outdoor patio cushions on the back porch of the home. The child was in good health, well-rested, and was immediately reunited with his relieved family.

Chapin Police Chief Thomas Griffin stated, "We are grateful for this positive outcome and thankful the child was found quickly and safely. It was a concerning situation for law enforcement and, more importantly, for the parents. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Chapin community and the Firebridge subdivision residents for their cooperation during the search."

The Chapin Police Department would also like to extend a sincere thank you to all first responders involved, including the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, the Lexington County Fire Service, SLED, and the FBI.
