Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County Administrator Joe Mergo announced Wednesday to his staff and all county employees that he is retiring after 28 years of distinguished service to the public, 25 years of which were working for the citizens of Lexington County. The members of the county council were advised of this earlier this week. Mergo is a talented administrator that has led Lexington County through a period of tremendous and continuing growth.
Mergo worked his way up to the position of county administrator holding a number of other positions in county government prior to landing at the top. He has served as the county's administrator for the past 9 years. He is extremely adept at dealing with multiple issues at once and has proven to be extremely conservative financially leading to an improvement in the county's bond rating. This has saved county citizens countless dollars over the years. He will leave the county on a sound financial footing with an excellent staff in place to lead after his departure. One former councilmember who had worked with him in the past said, "He's worked for and earned everything he's attained. There are few people in this country that understand the innerworkings of government as well as Joe Mergo. We will certainly miss him and his rock steady leadership."
A spokesman for Lexington County said his last day at work will be December 31st of this year. Reports are that after leaving, Mergo will go to work at Nephron Pharmaceuticals in Lexington County’s Saxe Gotha Industrial Park after finishing up with his administrative duties. This is a very successful business that located in Lexington County during his tenure.
We will have more information on this developing story as it becomes available.
