West Columbia, SC 04/09/2024 - A Brookland-Cayce High School student has been selected to receive a 2024-2025 National Security Language Initiative for Youth Scholarship (NSLI-Y) through the U.S. State Department.
Senior Zoe Partin will participate in the intensive language summer study program, administered by the American Councils for International Education, for Chinese (Mandarin), spending this summer in Hsinchu, Taiwan.
According to the website, the U.S. State Department’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth program was launched in 2006 to promote critical language learning among American youth. The U.S. State Department, in cooperation with American Councils for International Education, awards and administers merit-based scholarships to high school students for participation in summer and academic year immersion programs in locations where the eight identified NSLI-Y languages are spoken. NSLI-Y immerses participants in the cultural life of the host community, giving them formal and informal language practice. Participants receive intensive language instruction, live with a host family for all or part of the program, and participate in a variety of cultural activities.
