Capital City Lake Murray Country region a top Southern Destination of 2021

Lake Murray, SC 07/08/2021 (Paul Kirby) - Forbes magazine has named the Capital City/Lake Murray Country region a top Southern Destination for 2021. The selection was announced on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, by the staff of the Capital City Lake Murray Country Regional Tourism District. The article regarding the region’s selection ran on June 23, 2021.


According to the article that can be found on Forbes's website by clicking HERE, In the article, the writer says of the Capital City Lake Murray Country region, “It’s rare indeed to discover a region that artfully combines historic charm while bursting with every modern necessity, not to mention some of the south’s finest food.”

The article goes on to say, “Such is the case with Lake Murray Country, South Carolina, where visitors can peruse 40 art galleries, collect timeless wares and fun threads at specialty shops and taste their way through the more than 60 restaurants and bars. Burn off all those good eats with a city walking tour and stroll the streets that are etched in civil rights and Civil War history. Continue to step back in time and explore the area’s antebellum homes or one of the many museums that call Columbia home.”


The authors also praised the multi-generational attractions saying, “Make sure the little ones get in on the Ed-Venture, the largest children’s museum in the South, or take them for a walk on the wild side at the Riverbanks Zoo.”


They also touted the shop till you drop opportunities throughout the region saying visitors can, “Shop funky and fabulous stores in Columbia’s Five Points, the hip district located near the University of South Carolina.


“This is wonderful publicity for our region and it’s a great time for our region to stand out from the rest,” states Miriam Atria, President/CEO of Capital City Lake Murray Country.


The other selected destinations were Dunwoody, Georgia; Highlands, North Carolina; Birmingham, Alabama; Shenandoah Valley, Virginia and Lake Nona, Florida.


Capital City/Lake Murray Country is one of the state’s eleven tourism regions promoting tourism in Lexington, Newberry, Richland and Saluda Counties.
