Chapin Police arrest man for attempted murder, and other charges over the weekend

Chapin, SC 10/28/2024 – Monday, the Chapin Police Department announced the arrest of a suspect for attempted murder stemming from a stabbing that occurred at 103 Beaufort Street in the Town of Chapin over the weekend. Chapin police officers arrested Jacob Adam Riddle at his residence in Newberry County and he was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center shortly thereafter.

According to police, on Sunday, October 27th, 2024, around 2:00 a.m. officers responded to the parking lot of the Tipsy Toad Tavern at 103 Beaufort Street. The response was triggered by a report of a stabbing at that location. Officers collected evidence at the scene and took statements from several witnesses. These witnesses positively identified Riddle as the suspect.

The officers say that the witnesses told them that Riddle was witnessed stabbing the victim in the back. This prompted another individual to try and get Riddle off the victim. During the ensuing struggle, that individual was also cut with the knife. Once separated from the victim, Riddle fled the area in a vehicle. The victim was taken to Lexington Medical Center for emergency medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the assault.

With the assistance of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department, Chapin Police took the suspect into custody at his residence in Little Mountain later Sunday. Riddle was charged with Attempted Murder, Assault and Battery 2nd Degree, and Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime.

"Our officers working on this case have shown exceptional dedication throughout this investigation, working tirelessly to collect evidence and bring justice to those affected by this violent crime. I am immensely proud of their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our community. Violence in Chapin will not be tolerated; we will continue to fully investigate crimes of this nature and hold those responsible accountable to the fullest extent of the law," Chapin Police Chief Thomas W Griffin stated.
