Chapin Police Department is still assisting US Marshalls in search of a homicide suspect wanted in Tennessee

Chapin, SC 11/01/2024 (Paul Kirby) – Officers with a number of law enforcement agencies including the Town of Chapin Police Department, the US Marshalls, SLED, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, and other agencies are still searching for a homicide suspect wanted out of Tennessee. Nicholas (AKA Nic) Wayne Hamlett, 45, is believed to have family members that live in the Chapin area of Lexington County. Hamlett is described as a white male, with brown hair, blue eyes, who is 5’8” tall and weighs about 170 pounds. He is wanted for murder and violation of parole.

A citizen thought they spotted Hamlett near Chapin High School off Columbia Avenue Thursday night. Chapin police officers flooded the area and were quickly joined by the US Marshalls, K-9 units from several agencies, a helicopter from the SC Law Enforcement Division, and law enforcement officers from a number of other agencies. Although a perimeter was quickly set up, the man that was seen evaded the officers who were searching for him.

Throughout the night, law enforcement continued to patrol the area. The Chapin Police Department suggested everyone make sure their doors were locked overnight, and said they should call 911 if they saw anything suspicious.

There were some modifications to operations at both Chapin High School and Generations of Chapin, an assisted living community, throughout Friday as the manhunt continued.

As of 3:10 p.m. Friday, the suspect remained at large, and law enforcement continued to search the area. They ask if you see anything out of the ordinary, you dial 911. Chapin PD provides regular updates on the manhunt through their Facebook page that you can find HERE.
