St. Andrews, SC (Paul Kirby) - A vacant commercial building caught fire at #14 Berry Hill Road just off I-26 in the St. Andrews area of Lexington County Thursday evening. Firefighters from the Irmo Fire District, the Lexington County Fire Service, the City of West Columbia Fire Department, and the City of Columbia Fire Department all responded.
This building, which can be seen easily from I-26 at the intersection of St. Andrews Rd., has been used for a number of things over the years. At one point it was a high-end night club and most recently was a comedy club.
According to Captain Wargeny, the ranking officer on the fire from the Irmo Fire District, when crews arrived, they found smoke coming out of the building. Firefighters pulled their hoses and went to work fighting the fire which they were able to quickly bring under control. With cooperation from all the departments on the scene, the captain said that they were able to contain the fire to the building of origin.
According to Wargeny, the fire is under investigation at this time. An estimate of the damage to the building has not been released.
