Henderson was involved in a domestic dispute shortly before 3:00 a.m. Sunday on Rossmore Drive in the City. When that was reported, three Cayce police officers responded. When they arrived, they encountered Henderson on the lawn of the home. He opened fire on the trio of law enforcement officers striking and killing Officer Barr. He then retreated and barricaded himself and a tense 7-hour negotiation began led by a team from the City of Columbia Police Department. That ended when Henderson took his own life.
Since that time, a memorial has been set up in front of the Cayce Public Safety Complex. It is centered by Barr’s patrol car and citizens, fellow law enforcement officers, and firefighters have stopped by to pray, leave flowers and other items, and pay their respects. Barr was not only a police officer, but he also served as a volunteer firefighter/EMT with the Monetta Volunteer Fire Department. No official funeral plans have been released for Officer Barr at this point.
