Lexington, SC 03/11/1025 - A grant from the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation will provide potentially life-saving equipment to support search efforts by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department along Lake Murray.
Dominion Energy South Carolina President Keller Kissam presented Sheriff Jay Koon with two new underwater sonar devices during a March 11 ceremony at Bundrick Island. In 2024, Dominion Energy provided a $16,000 grant to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Foundation to purchase the new equipment.
The handheld sonar devices emit sonic pulses up to 165 feet to quickly scan a large body of water during emergency search and recovery operations, allowing greater visibility even in murky conditions.
“We are grateful to Dominion Energy for making such an important donation to a local law enforcement partner,” Koon said. “The underwater sonar devices will be valuable tools as we work to keep the water and shoreline of Lake Murray safe for our community to enjoy. Strong relationships between public safety and the private sector make Lexington County special.”
In partnership with Dominion Energy, sheriff’s department marine personnel patrol Lake Murray year-round and respond to emergencies on and around the 50,000-acre lake.
“The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department works tirelessly each day to serve and protect visitors and residents out on Lake Murray,” Kissam said. “We value our partnership with them, and we’re proud to support their work by donating this advanced technology which can act as their eyes underwater during an emergency.”
