According to the Town of Irmo, Sickinger, 42, was elected to its Town Council in 2020 and was elected mayor pro tem by the full council the following year.
Wednesday, The Town of Irmo released a statement that read, “The Town of Irmo is aware that Councilmember Erik Sickinger was arrested by agents of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Tuesday afternoon. The Town has been informed that he was taken to the Lexington County Detention Center and that the charges against him are unrelated to his role as a council member.
As this is an active law enforcement matter, the Town will not be providing any further comment. All inquiries should be directed to SLED."
Later Wednesday, Irmo’s Mayor Bill Danielson released a statement of his own that read, “On Tuesday, March 4th Councilman Sickinger was arrested at his home by agents of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The charges, as they read, are very serious and disturbing to all of us. This is a very fluid situation which we are monitoring the best we can. I, as well as the entire Town Council, are shocked and extremely disappointed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and their family at this time. The Irmo Police Department did not work this case and did not find out until yesterday. I want to let everyone know we are working on the problems and focusing on managing the Town of Irmo professionally and timely. This will not cause any delays for the Council’s business nor the day-to-day operations of the town. At this time, I would recommend you reach out to SLED if you have any specific questions.”
Wednesday afternoon, Sickinger was still being held in the Lexington County Detention Center on a $200,000 bond.
