Lexington, SC 11/01/2024 – The Joint Municipal Water and Sewer Commission (JMWSC) along with the Town of Batesburg-Leesville hosted a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday to celebrate the latest progress to provide a Water System Expansion Project to the town of Batesburg-Leesville, SC. The ceremony was held near the intersection of Augusta Highway and Calks Ferry Road. This will be the location for the booster pump station for JMWSC for this expansion.
Since 2013, the Town of Batesburg-Leesville has been under a state Consent Order to address water capacity concerns. By connecting to the JMWSC’s water supply, the Water System Expansion Project satisfies the town’s Corrective Action Plan by providing a sustainable, high-quality water supply. It also helps to improve the infrastructure in western Lexington County to support future economic growth.
The project received substantial financial support to the tune of $20 million from the South Carolina Infrastructure Investment Program and approximately $9 million in low interest Drinking Water State Revolving Funds monies. Representatives from the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority, and the SC Department of Environmental Service were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday.
This Water Expansion Project involves the construction of a 40,000 linear foot pipeline that is 24” diameter. It will run alongside US Hwy 1(Augusta Hwy) from the JMWSC’s current water tank at Calks Ferry Road where it connects to the town’s current system. The pump station will be able to move 2,500 gallons of water a minute and includes 23 new fire hydrants from the tank along with all the valves and needed fittings and appliances. On the Batesburg-Leesville side, there will be 21,400 feet of 16” line installed with 33 new fire hydrants.
Mayor Lancer Shull of the Town of Batesburg-Leesville said regarding the project, “This joint project is a great example of how our communities are coming together to resolve long-standing issues, expand clean water services, and improve the quality of life in Lexington County.
“We are proud of our partnership with Batesburg-Leesville,” stated Jay Nicholson, LMWSC’s General Manager and CEO. “It epitomizes Progress Through Cooperation and ensures reliable resources for a sustainable future through the expanded delivery of high-quality drinking water.”
