UPDATED: Lexington County Sheriff’s Department investigating deadly midday fire Monday west of Pelion

Pelion, SC 09/09/2024 (Paul Kirby) – The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department was on the scene investigating the circumstances surrounding a death in a mobile home fire west of the Town of Pelion Monday afternoon. This fire was dispatched at Old Charles Town Road near its intersection with Hartley Quarter Road near midday.

The first arriving fire trucks reported that this was a working fire. That normally indicates that they have either flames, smoke, or both visible when they arrive. Despatchers had already informed firefighters that someone may be trapped in the burning home. The first appointed incident commander did a quick 360 degree assessment of the home while more equipment and personnel arrived on the scene.

Because this is an extremely rural area of the county, more water tanker trucks were brought in to carry water back and forth to the closest fire hydrant. As the additional equipment arrived, the commander coordinated their efforts so that they didn’t get stacked up and in each other’s way. Brush trucks also responded because the fire had spread into some nearby woods. They were able to bring that under control quickly without it spreading very far.

Once the fire was put out, the Sheriff’s Department was notified. They responded due to the death. Deputies and detectives are notified and take the lead if a fire is deemed suspicious or there’s a death due to the fire. Because someone did perish because of the fire, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department eventually notifies SLED who assist due to the highly specialized techniques used in these investigations.
