Lexington High School implements Hold safety protocol after some students talk about the possibility of a firearm on campus Thursday

Lexington, SC 10/24/20204 (Paul Kirby) – On Thursday, October 24, 2024, Lexington High School was placed on a Hold safety procedure after some students were overheard talking about a weapon being on the school’s campus. This was done as a safety procedure out of an abundance of caution.

A Hold safety procedure involves having all students proceed to the classroom they are assigned to at that point. The students stay in the classrooms until the Hold safety procedure is lifted.

As stated earlier, a group of students were overheard talking about the possibility of another student being in possession of a weapon at the school. According to the districts staff, administrators and school resource officers responded immediately upon receiving the report about the possible safety concern. After locating the students in question, it was determined that there was no weapon on the campus, and the school returned to its normal procedures.

Because of the opportunity for some students to feel upset or scared, the district said they will have employees watch the students closely in case today’s events cause any of them to become stressed. In their statement they said, “Parents, if you have any concerns about how a student is responding to today’s incident, please reach out to our school counseling office. Remember our school is staffed with many caring adults who are here to help our students.”

They want to assure parents and students that their administrators and school resource officers take every potential safety concern very seriously. Their response is always immediate and thorough, guided by our commitment to ensuring a secure and supportive environment for all students and staff. They make these decisions with the safety and well-being of their students and employees at the forefront of everything they do.

The hold lasted about an hour before the school returned to its regular operations.
