Lexington School District One School Board of Trustee winners appear to have been chosen

Lexington, SC 11/06/2024 (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County School District One, the school district that serves Lexington, Gilbert, Pelion, the River Bluff area, Oak Grove, and the Red Bank and White Knoll community, has elected four members to serve on its Board of Trustees, Tuesday. Ten candidates filed to run for four seats that were open although one, Adriannah Greyson, withdrew her name from consideration long before yesterday’s balloting. Her name was still on the ballots because they had already been printed prior to her official withdrawal. However, Lexington District One voters were given a slip of paper with their ballots instructing them not to vote for her because she had withdrawn.

Of those four seats, two were open because longtime board members Anne Marie Green and Dr. Brent Powers did not seek re-election. The other two seats were open because incumbents Mike Anderson and Kathryn Winn Henson’s (Kathy) four-year terms were up, forcing them to run for re-election.

This, like almost all five Lexington County School Districts, was a non-partisan, at large election. This means that candidates do not have to declare their political affiliation. As an example, they do not have to file as a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or member of any other party as most political candidates for other offices do in Lexington County. They also have no districts meaning that a resident of any portion of the school district can vote for any of the candidates that they choose. They do not have to run in a specific area close to the voter or an area assigned by some other political body such as the SC State Legislature.

The nine candidates for the Lexington One board, in alphabetical order, were:

Mike Anderson (i)

McKenzie Flashnick

Kathryn (Kathy) Henson (i)

Dana Homesly

Nicholas Pizzuti

Mariel Taylor

David Terry

Scott Whetstone

Gene (Shelton) Yonce

(i) denotes incumbent

As of 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, the four candidates with the highest number of votes were:

                                                                        Total number of votes received

1. Kathy Henson                                                    22,590 or 15.23%

2. McKenzie Flashnick                                        18,041 or 12.16%

3. Nicholas Pizzuti                                               17,027 or 11.48%

4. Mike Anderson                                                  16,462 or 11.10%

The winners are official only after the election has been certified.

Too bad the incumbents were not held responsible for the taxpayers having to pay for 2 superintendents at the same time…1 to teach and 1 to learn. Why isn’t the new superintendent ready for the job now? I would really like to know.
