UPDATE: All Lexington County schools either closing or switching to eLearning for Thursday

Lexington County, SC 08/07/2024 (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County school districts have begun announcing that they will either remain shuttered on Thursday or switch to an eLearning day because of the return of severe weather. Meteorologists are now predicting that heavy rain will return but this time those rains will be accompanied by high winds.

Now that the soils in the area are completely saturated by water after the first round of storms from Tropical Storm Betty, large trees like hardwoods that have large but shallow root balls may begin to topple knocking out power and striking structures, vehicles, and blocking streets. Most school buses also do not operate in any more than 35 mile per hour sustained winds. Winds at these or greater speeds can act like a sail with buses tall straight sides. These can catch the wind and make the driver lose control or in some cases topple the bus over.

So far Lexington District One has cancelled all Thursday courses and after school activities while Lexington District Three has announced that it will switch to eLearning. Lexington District 2’s made the decision to close on Thursday as the school day was coming to a close Wednesday. Lexington 4 in the Swansea / Gaston area says their schools will also be closed tomorrow.

Please follow each districts’ social media or home pages for updates. We will also update as we learn more.
