Northside Middle School teacher scores a Teacher of the Game recognition

West Columbia, SC 09/17/2024 - A Northside Middle School teacher scored a Teacher of the Game recognition, a partnership between Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union and the University of South Carolina.

Arlene Neely, a Northside social studies teacher, was selected as a Palmetto Citizens Teacher of the Game, an educator reward and recognition program that takes place during each of the home Gamecock Football games. Neely was recognized as a winner during the September 14 USC-LSU game. As a winner, Neely received $1,000 from Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union, tickets to the football game, and recognition on the scoreboard and loudspeaker during the game.

Neely’s nomination for the award noted she had always wanted to be a teacher but took an “unconventional road,”leaving college early for family reasons and then returning 10 years later to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of South Carolina.

“When I say I truly love teaching, I mean it,” Neely said.  “I love helping kids realize how amazing they are.  I enjoy watching my students realize how crazy smart they are and how everyone has something to contribute to society.  I enjoy creating an environment where everyone is included and where students feel like they belong.

“I am so happy that I never gave up on my dream,” Neely said,  “because I now go to a job that I love.”

Dr. Tiffany Hall, principal of Northside Middle in Lexington School District Two, said Neely is most deserving of the recognition.

“Ms. Neely embodies the true spirit of resilience and dedication. Her journey to becoming a teacher is a testament to her unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of her students,” Dr. Hall said.  “She’s not only a teacher but a beacon of hope, creating a safe and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and empowered.”
