One dies after Tuesday morning vehicle collision near Irmo

Irmo, SC 03/02/2023 (Paul Kirby) – One person has died after being involved in a three-vehicle collision just northwest of the Town of Irmo close to Lake Murray. The collision occurred on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at the intersection of North Lake Drive (SC Hwy 6), Innsbruck Drive, and West Bury Place. It happened at approximately 10:05 a.m. that morning.

According to Lance Corporal Tyler Tidwell of the SC Highway Patrol (SCHP), the three vehicles involved included a Honda Pilot SUV, a Toyota Tundra pickup truck, and a Cadillac CTS sedan. Tidwell said that the SCHP’s investigation revealed that the Honda SUV was travelling west toward Lexington on North Lake Drive, while the Toyota Tundra was stopped at the sign on Innsbruck Drive. The Cadillac was travelling on West Bury Place approaching North Lake where it then pulled into North Lake Drive in the path of the Honda. The two vehicles collided and caused the Cadillac to cross North Lake Drive violently before it hit the Toyota pickup which was stopped at the sign. All three of the vehicles involved had a single occupant, the drivers, in them. Lance Corporal Tidwell said that the drivers of the Toyota and the Honda were not seriously injured in the crash.

Tidwell went on to say that the driver of the Cadillac was gravely injured in the collision. That individual was first rushed by EMS to Prisma Health’s Parkridge where doctors worked to stabilize the patient. They then packaged and transferred the person to Prisma Health’s Richland Trauma Center in Columbia. Despite the heroic work of the caregivers at both hospitals, the driver of the Cadillac eventually succumbed to their injuries and died. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has not yet released the name of the decedent.
