Chapin, SC 08/10/2024 (Paul Kirby) – Master Trooper William Bennett of the SC Highway Patrol (SCHP) said late Thursday that 2 people died following a 3-vehicle collision on I-26 west near Chapin. The collision happened at approximately 2:43 a.m. Thursday morning.
Trooper Bennett said that the collision involved an International tractor trailer truck, a small Nissan sedan, and a Dodge Ran pickup pulling a trailer that were all travelling west on I-26 just north of the Chapin exit. The tractor trailer and the small sedan slowed but the Dodge did not recognize this. It struck the sedan in the rear pushing it into the rear of the tractor trailer. The collision killed both the driver and passenger of the sedan and sent the occupants of the Dodge to Palmetto Richland’s Trauma Hospital.
Since the crash, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher positively identified the individuals who died in the sedan as LaRhonda Davis Gibson, 47, and 23-month-old Ketron Menteze Gibson Jr. of Newberry. Fisher said that both died on the scene as a result of the collision.
The collision still remains under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s office.
