Red Bank, SC 07/21/2021 (Paul Kirby) – The SC Highway Patrol released a statement Wednesday afternoon saying that one person died in a single-vehicle collision on South Lake Drive near New Orangeburg Road today. According to Lance Corporal Tyler Tidwell of the SC Highway Patrol, the collision occurred at 12:12 p.m.
Tidwell said that a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer was travelling west on South Lake Drive toward Lexington when the driver lost control, veered off the left side of the road, and then struck several trees before the SUV overturned and caught fire. The driver of the vehicle, the only occupant, was trapped in the wreckage and was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the collision.
The Lexington County Fire Service had a truck on the scene quickly followed by units from EMS, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, and the SCHP. When that first fire truck arrived, the senior operator advised other responding units that the vehicle was on its roof and on fire. Even though the fire was extinguished quickly, the trapped driver could not be saved.
Law enforcement officer closed South Lake for several hours as an investigation into the collision began. Travelers backed up in both directions until a detour was established to lead others around the site of the collision. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher's office will released the name of the deceased river after all the proper notifications have been made.
