Sheriff’s Department releases charges and identification of suspect from warrant service in Pelion

Pelion, SC 01/19/2022 (Paul Kirby) – The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has released the identity of the suspect they took into custody this morning during a warrant service in Lexington Farms neighborhood just outside the town of Pelion. According to Captain Adam Myrick, spokesman for Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, Carlos Antonio Grooms, 35 was arrested this morning on a warrant for narcotic distribution of Schedule ll drug, 2nd offense. Captain Myrick said that they also executed a search warrant for his home at another location in the county.

Schedule II drugs are very addicting and dangerous. These include narcotics with familiar names such as Dilaudid, Demerol, OxyContin, Percocet, morphine, and fentanyl. They have led to hundreds of overdose deaths in Lexington County. In 2019, for the first time in U.S. history, a person was more likely to die from an accidental overdose of this type of drugs than from a motor vehicle crash, according to National Safety Council analysis. These deaths have hit people in the 25 to 34 age range particularly hard.

Wednesday morning just after 7:00 a.m., neighbors of the home on Canal Drive in the Lexington Farms development near Pelion where Grooms was staying say they were awakened by a loud explosion. One man said he was sure that was caused by a flashbang, a grenade like devise used by Law Enforcment Tactical Teams. They make a loud, explosive noise and a bright flash. Officers utilize these to disorient suspects while they are moving in to take them into custody. The witness said that the loud report was followed by instructions from a law enforcement officer speak over a public address system telling neighbors to stay in their homes until an all clear was giving. The witness said that immediately after they were told to stay inside, the same officer could be heard over the speaker ordering Grooms to come out of the home with his hands up.

Although the Sheriff’s Department had a special team on the scene with several vehicles a witness described as militarized, Grooms apparently was taken into custody without much trouble. One neighbor said, “It was obvious that the deputies were well equipped and prepared to do whatever it took to arrest this guy.”

Grooms is currently being held in the Lexington County Detention Center on Gibson Road in Lexington.
