South Congaree, SC 03/31/2023 (Paul Kirby) – The South Congaree Police Department is investigating a shooting that has injured one person in the Congaree Gardens subdivision on Friday afternoon. According to South Congaree Police Chief Josh Shumpert, this shooting left one person with what he described as, “non-life-threatening,” injuries.
At approximately 1:45 p.m. Friday, police responded to the area of Orchard Lane in Congaree Gardens. This is one of the town’s smallest and oldest subdivisions and is located off Pine Street near its intersection with Church Street in the town. After the police went enroute, the fire service and Lexington County EMS were dispatched to a gunshot wound at the same home the police responded to.
Within a short time of arriving on the scene, Captain Chris Garner, speaking on behalf of the department, told The Ledger that this was not a random act of violence, and they had the scene under control. He said that there was no danger to the general public from this incident.
Shortly after 3:00 p.m., Chief Shumpert himself contacted The Ledger and said that the person who was injured had wounds that were not considered life-threatening. He also reiterated what Captain Garner had said and wanted to assure the public that this violence was not random, and there was no danger to the citizens of the town or that neighborhood as a result of what had transpired. He indicated that the department had quickly started an investigation into this shooting, but he had no further information that he could share at that time.
We are closely following this story and will update with additional information as soon as the Police Department can release further without causing a negative impact to their investigation.
