West Columbia’s historic Skyline Club to be auctioned at the end of the month

West Columbia, SC 01/06/2025 (Paul Kirby) – Auction Management Corporation, a SC licensed auction company, has been retained to auction the Midlands’ most iconic country and western club the Skyline Supper Club at the end of January. The club, located at 100 Lee St. West Columbia, SC near the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, is well-known to generations of South Carolinians who enjoyed their first real club experience there. It has been here since shortly after World War II. The iconic Country and Western Club sits on 3.8 acres. It will be auctioned on Thursday, January 30th, 2025, in an ON-LINE ONLY format with a closing bid deadline of 12:00 Noon EST.

This historic nightclub is ready for use with tables, chairs, vintage neon lighting, and a small but fully functioning kitchen. There are six bars and a large seating area to accommodate a crowd. There is also outdoor seating in “the corral,” with a small stage and a bar. The indoor main stage is 20’ x 40’ with professional lighting and sound system. The sound and DJ booth is in the club's center.

The club has multiple rooms for offices and a spacious green room to accommodate performers. There is ample storage space for supplies and a large walk-in cooler. The building is said to have a maximum capacity of 900 guests and there is plenty of parking.

A visit to the Skyline Club with friends and family was often a rite of passage for those coming of age in South Carolina. Many line dances spontaneously broke out and club fans sung along with the bands. Often, music fans worked hard all week before flocking to “The Skyline” on the weekends. Over the decades, it has played host to some country and western greats and featured many house bands that were just getting started in this genre. In its last few concerts before closing in 2023, Colt Ford, Molly Hatchet, and Chase Mathews who opened for Keith Urban on tour, played in the club.

During WWII, this property and the surrounding area were used by Doolittle’s Raiders as a training and staging area prior to their historic raid on the island of Japan. Shortly after the war, the building was converted and opened as the Skyline Supper Club. Locals simply referred to it as “The Skyline” and the phrase, “I’ll meet you at the Skyline,” was repeated by thousands over the years. The unofficial weekend wear at “The Skyline” was cowboy boots, big rodeo belt buckles, and the appropriate cowboy hat as many couples met for the first time at the club before launching into a lifetime together. Interesting characters like the nearby Town of Swansea’s longtime fire chief Lucius Martin often filled the club. Chief Martin would stroll into the main building almost every weekend, place his large fire dispatch radio in the middle of “his” table, and then dance the night away until he was well up into his senior years.

The site occupies five tax parcels and has frontage on Lee Street, Quartermaster Street, and Miami Street. The nightclub building and a small adjoining tract are on Lexington County tax map parcels 05634-05-002 (1.3± acres) and 005634-05-004 (0.1± acres) in the V formed by Lee and Quartermaster Streets.
