Woman whose dead body found in Belk’s Department store was missing 4 days before being found

Lexington County, SC 09/22/2022 (Paul Kirby) – A woman who went missing on Thursday, September 15, 2022, was found 4 days later in a restroom she was tasked with cleaning at Belk’s Department store in the Lexington County portion of Columbiana Center Mall.


According to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher, the woman was seen entering the restroom by surveillance cameras at approximately 7:00 a.m. on the morning of September 15, 2022. Her body was located by a store employee in a public restroom at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 19, 2022.

According to Coroner Fisher, the woman was Bessie Durham, 63, of Columbia, SC. An autopsy for Durham is scheduled for September 22, 2022, at MUSC in Charleston. There has been no explanation released regarding the 4-day gap btween the time Durham went missing and when she was found. Fisher did say at this time, foul play is not suspected.


The Lexington County Coroner’s Office will continue to investigate this incident.
